Lessons Learned

Okay, this isn’t the first and last time you’re going to hear this: 2020 is rough. With natural disasters, global pandemics, white supremacy, and a ton of other shitty things we’ve seen occur this year we can say that it truly sucks. However, I genuinely believe that it could get better, I mean we have 6 months left and it’s not all bad. We’ve learned to appreciate each other and we’ve grown so much as a society and as individuals. I know it’s been pretty bad but we have to look at the bright side of this year and have hope for the next one. You know when people say that “everything happens for a reason”? It’s true and I believe that this year was meant for us to learn, grow, and reflect so that our lives could be better and humans could progress. So, me being me, I decided to try to inspire you and talk about the lessons I (and my peers) have learned so far in 2020:

  • Never take anything for granted

This is pretty self explanatory and it’s been said non stop in these last couple of months but it’s true. When you’re with your friends, eating at your favorite place, spending time with your family or whatever you do, live in the moment. Take pictures, make memories, and be grateful for what you have because it can easily be taken away.

  • Your success depends on you

We’ve had a ton of a downtime in the last couple of months. Now, don’t get me wrong, it is important to take breaks (as you’ll see later on) but you should be reflecting on your dreams and considering how you can pursue them right now. Create a plan or at least think about who you’d like to be in the coming years. Or just workout because you have a goal, it doesn’t matter as long as you’re improving yourself and doing something today that will benefit you tomorrow.

  • We’re all equal but we don’t all agree

This is very hard to write. I still don’t understand how there’s a disagreement on the topic of racism but there is. Listen, if you find someone who is on the wrong side of this war try to have a decent discussion and if you see that you’re speaking to a brick wall then sometimes you just have to drop it. However, we can’t just drop it when it comes to protesting and trying to change this nation. We have to keep fighting because black lives matter every day and our voices are stronger than ever. We can do this. We can beat racism.

  • It’s okay to be single

I know this is a sort of silly one but it’s true. I recently had this conversation with one of my girlfriends and we decided that, although it’s nice to have attention sometimes, the best relationship you can have is with yourself. I promise I’m trying my hardest not to sound cheesy but I’ve never been happier while single. I feel like I’ve grown so much and I’ve learned to love myself more than I ever could with someone by my side. Embrace your single self and enjoy it babe!

  • Looks genuinely don’t matter

Guys, if you learn anything from this post, I hope it’s this. LISTEN (sorry, I don’t mean to be aggressive, I just want you to pay attention to this). I’m not lying when I say that looks don’t matter. Who cares? If you’re confident in yourself and authentic you will be considered beautiful I promise you. Don’t worry about your weight, or your acne, or whatever else you have going on. I know, easier said than done, but seriously at the end of the day it doesn’t matter as long as you have a great soul. Look at what quarantine did to us. It didn’t matter if you had the nicest clothes, or if you were skinny or fat, or if you had clear or acne ridden skin. It didn’t matter because it happened to all of us because we’re all the same. Just be who you are.

  • Your real friends will always support you

You should already know this one but it’s been emphasized during this time. Those friends who check up on you because you haven’t spoken in a while or send you positive vibes without even knowing you need it.. Those are the friends you should keep around you. You can know everyone on your school campus or at your job, but the people who truly show they’re there for you are the ones who actually care. A lot. Consider that when you speak to everyone in your life. You deserve the best and you should be picky about who surrounds you.

  • It’s important to take breaks when you need to

Listen to your body. My favorite way to do this is to sit down, close my eyes, and just breathe. Your body will let you know if you’re hungry, tired, or bored with what you’re doing. You just have to listen. Sometimes, when you’re on a roll it’s hard to stop but if you need to take that couple of minutes or days to regenerate, then by all means you should because you never know what could happen if you don’t.

  • Your priority should be YOU

Always try to improve yourself. I know this one sounds a lot like my “your success depends on you” point but I promise it’s not. My point here is that you should reflect on everything you’ve done in the last year. Ask yourself this question: “Have I done anything recently to get closer to who I want to be?” You have to be honest with yourself without being critical. Remember that you’re the most important person in your life and you should treat yourself as such.

  • There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel

Okay, if you’ve made it this far, kudos to you! My last point is meant to push you to keep going. This year has been hard and maybe it won’t get better but look how far we’ve come already. If things are still bad then we can have hope for 2021. I know I do. If you’re going through something other than the craziness in the world right now, just know that I’m proud of you. I truly am, I’m proud of you for pushing through and I want you to keep doing so. Things will get better because there is a balance to life, things can’t always be good or always be bad. You’ll be okay and you’ll come out of this stronger and wiser than before. Keep going, you’ve got this!
